In 2000, Michael moved from his hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and relocated to his current homestead, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Soon after his arrival in Winnipeg, he was recruited to take over production, recording and engineering duties for the legendary Frek Sho crew. During his time with the seminal hip-hop group, Michael played major roles in 8 studio releases, including two-thousand-and-three’s Paper Cuts EP.
As the members of Frek Sho began to go their separate ways, DJ Kutdown became more and more motivated to develop his own vision, and create a movement through which to realize it. Using his innovative talent and solid work-ethic as pillars, the DJ/producer took it upon himself to build a new foundation for independent hip-hop artists in Canada; and in 2004, Michael established his Foultone records imprint. With his friends as collaborators, Michael remains the back-bone of Foultone, dealing directly with all aspects of the label.
From Magnum K.I.’s college-radio favorite, Gun Shy EP, released in 2008, to highly anticipated albums by roster members Pip Skid and Unknown Mizery, Foultone records is sure to turn some heads in the independent music scene this year and next. And with Michael as the main producer for each of these releases, as well as for his own solo scratch album due out in 2010, it’s about time you get used to hearing the name: DJ Kutdown. After all, this is only the beginning.
